Zero-Waste Pallet Recycling

Every year, hundreds of millions of pallets reach end of life in the United States. At Universal Pallet Supply, we ensure none of that wood goes to waste. Our comprehensive recycling process transforms broken, damaged, and worn-out pallets into valuable products — from landscape mulch and animal bedding to biomass fuel and reclaimed lumber.

Our Process

The Full Recycling Lifecycle

From the moment we pick up your pallets to the moment the recycled material reaches its new purpose, every step is carefully managed and tracked.

01

Collection & Pickup

We collect pallets directly from your facility. Our trucks arrive on your schedule, and our crew loads everything. You never need to sort, stack, or prepare pallets before pickup. Collection is free for all recycling customers.

02

Inspection & Sorting

At our processing facility, every pallet is inspected individually. Pallets that can be repaired for reuse are routed to our refurbishment line. Pallets beyond repair are directed to the recycling stream. Nothing is wasted — every piece has a destination.

03

Dismantling

End-of-life pallets are carefully dismantled. Nails and metal fasteners are extracted and sent to metal recyclers. Boards are separated by wood type, grade, and moisture content. Sound boards are salvaged for pallet repair; damaged wood moves to the grinding stage.

04

Grinding & Processing

Wood that cannot be reused as lumber is processed through industrial grinders. The resulting material is screened and sorted by particle size to create different end products: landscaping mulch, animal bedding, biomass fuel chips, and industrial wood fiber.

05

Repurposing & Distribution

Finished recycled products are packaged and distributed to end users. Mulch goes to landscapers and garden centers. Bedding goes to equine and livestock operations. Biomass fuel goes to energy producers. Reclaimed lumber goes back into new pallets.

Second Life Products

What Happens to Recycled Pallets

Every piece of wood from an end-of-life pallet finds a new purpose. Here are the primary products created through our recycling process.

Landscape Mulch

Ground and screened wood chips used for landscaping, garden beds, and municipal green spaces. Available in natural and colored varieties. High demand from commercial and residential buyers.

Animal Bedding

Finely processed wood shavings and chips suitable for equine stalls, poultry houses, and livestock pens. Clean, kiln-dried, and free of chemical treatments. A natural, absorbent bedding material.

Biomass Fuel

Chipped and dried wood processed into fuel-grade biomass for energy production. Used by power plants and industrial boilers as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. Contributes to carbon-neutral energy generation.

Reclaimed Lumber

Sound boards and stringers salvaged during dismantling are returned to our repair line. These boards replace broken components in other pallets, creating a true closed-loop system where wood gets multiple lifecycles.

Full Transparency

What Happens to Your Pallets After Pickup

When our truck leaves your dock, every pallet is tracked through a documented chain of custody. Here is the complete lifecycle from your facility to the pallet's next purpose.

Arrival at Our Portsmouth, VA Facility

Pallets arrive at our processing yard and are weighed, counted, and logged into our tracking system. Each load is assigned a unique batch number that follows the material through every stage of processing. This documentation supports the waste diversion certificates and environmental reports we provide to your business.

Our facility processes up to 15,000 pallets per day across multiple production lines. Incoming pallets are staged in a receiving area before being routed to the appropriate processing stream based on initial visual assessment.

Triage and Sorting

Trained inspectors evaluate each pallet individually. Pallets that can be economically repaired are pulled from the recycling stream and sent to our refurbishment line — this maximizes wood reuse and generates the highest environmental return per unit.

Pallets beyond economical repair enter the recycling stream. Metal fasteners are separated using magnetic extraction systems. Wood is sorted by species, moisture content, and contamination level. Clean, untreated wood goes to higher-value end products. Treated or painted wood is processed separately to ensure product purity.

Processing and Grinding

End-of-life wood enters our industrial grinding operation. Primary grinders reduce full boards and stringers into coarse chips. Secondary grinders and screens sort the material by particle size to meet the specifications of different end products — fine particles for animal bedding, medium chips for landscape mulch, and larger pieces for biomass fuel production.

Metal detected at any point in the grinding process is captured by inline magnets and eddy current separators, then sent to metal recycling partners. This dual-stream approach ensures both wood and metal components are fully recovered.

Distribution to End Markets

Finished recycled products are packaged, stored, and distributed to established buyer networks. Landscape mulch ships to garden centers, municipal parks departments, and commercial landscapers throughout Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic. Animal bedding supplies equine facilities and poultry operations. Biomass fuel chips are delivered to regional power generation plants.

Every ton of recycled material that enters the market displaces demand for virgin resources, compounding the environmental benefit of your decision to recycle instead of discard.

Recovery Rates

Materials Recovery Breakdown

Every component of a wooden pallet is recovered and repurposed. Here is how the material from a typical batch of recycled pallets is distributed across end uses.

35%

Reclaimed Lumber

Sound boards and stringers salvaged for pallet repair and refurbishment, giving wood a second full service life.

28%

Landscape Mulch

Ground and screened wood chips sold to landscapers, garden centers, and municipalities for erosion control and garden beds.

20%

Animal Bedding

Finely processed shavings used in equine stalls, poultry houses, and livestock operations as absorbent, natural bedding.

12%

Biomass Fuel

Dried wood chips processed into fuel-grade biomass for power generation as a renewable energy alternative.

5%

Metal Recycling

Nails, staples, and metal fasteners extracted magnetically and sold to scrap metal recyclers for reprocessing.

Total material recovery: 100%. No wood, metal, or usable material from any pallet we process is sent to a landfill. Every component has a documented destination.

Competitive Advantage

Why Recycle With Us vs. Others

Not all recycling services are created equal. Many waste haulers simply dump pallets in landfills or charge premium disposal fees. Here is how Universal Pallet Supply compares to the alternatives.

Typical Waste Haulers

Charge $3 to $6 per pallet for removal
Pallets often end up in landfill despite claims otherwise
No documentation or certificates of recycling provided
Unpredictable pickup schedules and frequent no-shows
No sustainability data for your ESG reporting
Minimum load requirements that penalize smaller volumes

Universal Pallet Supply

Free pickup — no per-pallet charges, no hidden fees
Verified zero-waste processing with full chain of custody
Certificates of recycling issued for every load processed
Reliable, on-schedule pickups with dedicated account contacts
Detailed sustainability reports for ESG, LEED, and compliance
No minimum quantity — we pick up 20 pallets or 20,000

The difference is clear: our recycling service costs you nothing, sends zero material to landfill, and provides the documentation your business needs for sustainability compliance. Most waste haulers cannot make any of those three claims.
