Common Questions
What types of pallets does Universal Pallet Supply sell?
We sell used wooden pallets (Grade A, B, and C), recycled pallets (#1 Recycled, #2 Recycled, and Combo), new custom-built pallets, and heat-treated ISPM-15 compliant pallets for international shipping. We carry all standard sizes including the 48x40 GMA pallet, 42x42, 48x48, and many more. We also build custom pallets to your exact specifications.
What is the difference between used and recycled pallets?
Used pallets are pallets that have been previously used in the supply chain and are sold in their current condition after inspection and grading. Recycled pallets have been dismantled, and their lumber has been used to build new pallets. Recycled pallets may contain boards from multiple source pallets and are rebuilt to meet specific structural standards. Both options are more affordable and sustainable than buying new.
How much do used pallets cost?
Pricing depends on the grade, size, quantity, and your delivery location. As a general guide for standard 48x40 pallets: Grade A ranges from $7.50 to $12.00, Grade B from $5.50 to $9.00, and Grade C from $3.50 to $6.00. Recycled and combo pallets can be even more affordable. Volume discounts are available for orders of 100 or more. Contact us for a personalized quote.
What is the most common pallet size?
The most common pallet size in North America is the 48x40 inch GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet. It accounts for roughly 30% of all pallets produced in the United States. This size is designed to fit standard truck trailers (two pallets wide), maximize warehouse racking efficiency, and meet the receiving requirements of most major retailers.
Do you deliver pallets?
Yes, we offer delivery throughout the United States. Our fleet handles everything from small local deliveries to full truckload shipments. Delivery costs depend on your location, the quantity ordered, and whether you need a flatbed, van trailer, or specialty equipment. We provide delivery quotes alongside your pallet pricing so there are no surprises.
What is the minimum order quantity?
There is no strict minimum order, but pallet pricing is volume-driven. Orders under 50 pallets may carry a small-order surcharge to cover handling and delivery costs. For the best per-unit pricing, we recommend ordering in quantities of 100 or more. If you need a smaller quantity, we are happy to work with you to find the most cost-effective solution.
Do you buy used pallets?
Absolutely. Our pallet buyback program pays you for your surplus or unwanted pallets. We purchase used pallets in all conditions, from pristine to heavily damaged. Pricing depends on the grade, size, quantity, and your location. We can arrange pickup from your facility on a one-time or recurring basis. Many of our customers turn pallet disposal from a cost into a revenue stream.
What is ISPM-15 and do I need it?
ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is a global standard that requires wooden packaging materials used in international trade to be heat-treated or fumigated to prevent the spread of pests and diseases. If you are shipping goods internationally on wooden pallets, you almost certainly need ISPM-15 compliant pallets. Non-compliant shipments can be rejected at the border, fumigated at your expense, or subject to fines. We supply certified heat-treated pallets with the required IPPC stamp.
What does heat-treated mean?
Heat treatment (HT) is a phytosanitary process where the core temperature of the wood is raised to at least 56 degrees Celsius (132.8 degrees Fahrenheit) for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes. This kills insects, larvae, and pathogens without the use of chemicals. Heat-treated pallets are required for international shipping under ISPM-15 and are stamped with the HT designation and the IPPC logo to prove compliance.
How do I know what grade of pallet I need?
The right grade depends on your application. Choose Grade A if your customer will see the pallet, if you are using automated warehouse systems, or if you are shipping internationally. Grade B is ideal for general warehousing, domestic shipping, and one-way shipments. Grade C is perfect for internal warehouse use, short-distance transport, and applications where appearance does not matter. If you are unsure, contact us for a free consultation and we will recommend the most cost-effective grade for your needs.
Are recycled pallets as strong as new pallets?
Yes. A professionally rebuilt recycled pallet meets the same structural and load-bearing standards as a new pallet. At Universal Pallet Supply, every recycled pallet passes our multi-point inspection process that checks board integrity, fastener security, stringer or block condition, load capacity, and dimensional accuracy. The only difference between a #1 Recycled pallet and a new pallet is the cosmetic appearance of the wood.
How are pallets recycled?
Pallet recycling involves several steps. First, used pallets are collected from businesses and sorted by condition. Pallets in good shape are cleaned and resold. Repairable pallets have damaged boards replaced with reclaimed lumber. Pallets too damaged to repair are dismantled, and the usable lumber is salvaged for rebuilding other pallets. Wood that cannot be reused in pallets is ground into mulch, animal bedding, or biomass fuel. Nothing goes to waste.
What happens to pallets that cannot be recycled?
At Universal Pallet Supply, we operate on a zero-waste principle. Wood that cannot be reused in pallets is ground and repurposed into landscape mulch, animal bedding, particleboard feedstock, or biomass fuel. Metal fasteners are separated and sent to metal recyclers. We do not send any material to landfill. Every piece of a pallet gets a second life in some form.
How quickly can you fill an order?
Standard orders for common sizes and grades ship within 2 to 5 business days. Large volume orders (1,000 or more pallets) or custom specifications may require 5 to 10 business days. Rush orders are available for time-sensitive needs at a small surcharge. We maintain large inventories of the most popular sizes to ensure fast turnaround for our customers.
Do you offer pallet management programs?
Yes. Our pallet management program is a comprehensive service that handles your entire pallet lifecycle. We track your pallet inventory, schedule deliveries of fresh pallets, pick up used and damaged pallets, repair and recycle them, and return them to circulation. This end-to-end approach reduces your costs, eliminates waste, and simplifies your logistics. It is ideal for businesses that use 500 or more pallets per month.
Can you build custom pallets?
Yes, we build custom pallets to any specification. Whether you need oversized pallets for heavy machinery, narrow pallets for tight spaces, reinforced pallets for extreme loads, or pallets with specific notch patterns for specialized equipment, our team can design and build exactly what you need. Custom orders typically require a lead time of 5 to 10 business days depending on complexity and quantity.
What areas do you serve?
We serve businesses throughout the United States. Our primary service area covers the greater Portsmouth, Virginia metropolitan area and the Mid-Atlantic region, but we regularly ship pallets to all 50 states via our freight network. Delivery costs vary by distance, but we work with a network of carriers to keep shipping affordable regardless of your location.
How do recycled pallets help the environment?
Every recycled pallet saves approximately 3.5 board feet of virgin lumber, avoids roughly 25 kilograms of CO2 emissions, and keeps about 5 kilograms of waste out of landfills. At scale, companies switching to recycled pallets can save the equivalent of hundreds of trees annually. Recycled pallets also reduce water consumption since lumber production is highly water-intensive. Choosing recycled pallets is one of the simplest and most impactful sustainability decisions a business can make.
Do your pallets come with any warranty or guarantee?
Every pallet we sell is inspected and graded to meet our published quality standards. If a pallet does not meet the specifications of the grade you ordered, we will replace it at no cost. We stand behind the structural integrity of every pallet we sell. For recurring customers with management program contracts, we offer ongoing quality monitoring and automatic replacement of any pallets that fail prematurely.
How does your pricing work for large or recurring orders?
Our pricing is volume-based and decreases as order quantity increases. Standard price breaks occur at 100, 500, and 1,000 pallets per order. For recurring orders, we offer contract pricing that locks in a per-unit rate for the duration of the agreement, typically 3 to 12 months. Contract customers also receive priority fulfillment and dedicated account management. Contact us with your estimated monthly volume and we will provide a custom pricing proposal.
What is the ordering process from start to delivery?
The process is straightforward. First, contact us with the pallet size, grade, and quantity you need. We will provide a quote within a few hours, including delivery costs to your location. Once you approve the quote, we confirm availability and schedule production or pull from our inventory. Standard orders ship within 2 to 5 business days. You will receive a delivery confirmation with tracking information and an estimated arrival window. Our driver will contact you to coordinate unloading.
Can you build pallets to custom dimensions and specifications?
Yes. We build custom pallets to any specification including non-standard dimensions, reinforced construction for heavy loads, specific wood species (oak, pine, poplar), custom board spacing, notch patterns, chamfering, and heat treatment. Custom orders require 5 to 10 business days depending on complexity and quantity. We can also replicate a sample pallet if you provide one or send detailed measurements and photos.
What does heat treatment involve and how long does it take?
Heat treatment is a phytosanitary process where we raise the core temperature of the wood to at least 56 degrees Celsius (132.8 degrees Fahrenheit) and maintain that temperature for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes. This kills all insects, larvae, and pathogens without using any chemicals. The total process including loading, heating, holding, and cooling takes approximately 6 to 12 hours per batch. Every heat-treated pallet receives the official IPPC/HT stamp certifying compliance with ISPM-15 international standards.
Can I use standard wooden pallets for international shipping?
No. All solid wood packaging materials, including pallets, used in international trade must be treated and marked in accordance with ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15). This means the pallet must be either heat-treated or fumigated and stamped with the IPPC mark. Shipping on non-compliant pallets can result in cargo being held at customs, forced fumigation at your expense, fines, or the shipment being refused entry entirely. Universal Pallet Supply provides certified heat-treated pallets ready for export.
How should I store pallets to maximize their lifespan?
Store pallets off the ground on a flat, dry surface whenever possible. Indoor storage is ideal. If storing outdoors, keep pallets covered and elevated on concrete blocks or gravel pads to prevent moisture absorption from the ground. Avoid stacking pallets more than 15 units high to prevent bottom pallets from being crushed. Keep pallets away from standing water, sprinkler systems, and direct soil contact. Rotate your stock using a first-in-first-out system to prevent aging pallets from deteriorating in storage.
How long do wooden pallets typically last?
The lifespan of a wooden pallet depends on the grade, usage intensity, storage conditions, and how it is handled. A well-maintained Grade A pallet in a controlled warehouse environment can last 3 to 5 years or more. Grade B pallets typically last 1 to 3 years of regular use. Pallets used in rough environments like construction sites or outdoor yards may last only 6 to 12 months. Recycled pallets from Universal Pallet Supply are rebuilt to meet structural standards and can deliver the same usable lifespan as their grade-equivalent used pallets.
What is the weight capacity of a standard 48x40 pallet?
A standard 48x40 GMA pallet has three weight capacity ratings. The static load capacity (pallet sitting on a flat floor) is approximately 2,500 to 2,800 pounds. The dynamic load capacity (pallet being moved by a forklift) is approximately 2,500 pounds. The racking load capacity (pallet spanning racking beams with no center support) is approximately 2,200 pounds. These ratings assume even weight distribution across the pallet surface. Concentrated point loads reduce these capacities significantly.
What types of wood are pallets made from?
Pallets are made from two categories of wood: hardwood and softwood. Hardwood species include oak, maple, birch, and beech. Hardwood pallets are heavier, stronger, and more durable but cost more. Softwood species include southern yellow pine, spruce, and fir. Softwood pallets are lighter, less expensive, and more widely available. In North America, the majority of pallets are made from softwood, primarily southern yellow pine, due to its favorable balance of cost, strength, and availability.
Do you have any environmental certifications for your pallets?
Universal Pallet Supply operates with a zero-waste commitment. We recycle 100 percent of the materials we handle. Wood that cannot be reused in pallets is ground into mulch, animal bedding, or biomass fuel. Metal fasteners are separated and sent to metal recyclers. While we do not hold a specific third-party environmental certification, our recycling practices align with the principles of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA) environmental guidelines. We can provide documentation of our recycling practices for your ESG reporting needs.
Do you offer bulk discounts for very large orders?
Yes. We offer tiered volume discounts starting at 100 pallets per order, with deeper discounts at 500 and 1,000 units. For truckload quantities (typically 400 to 600 pallets per full truckload depending on size), we offer our most competitive pricing. Customers ordering 1,000 or more pallets per month qualify for our contract pricing program, which provides the lowest available per-unit cost, priority production scheduling, and a dedicated account representative.
What payment terms do you offer?
We offer several payment options. New customers typically start with payment due upon delivery or prepayment via credit card, ACH transfer, or wire. Established customers with approved credit applications can receive Net 15 or Net 30 payment terms. We accept all major credit cards, company checks, ACH bank transfers, and wire transfers. For large or recurring orders, we can set up automated billing and invoicing to simplify your accounts payable process.
What is your return policy if pallets do not meet expectations?
If pallets do not match the grade or specifications you ordered, contact us within 48 hours of delivery. We will arrange an inspection and, if the pallets do not meet our published standards for the ordered grade, we will replace them at no charge or issue a full refund. We ask that you do not use, modify, or repair the pallets in question before the inspection. For recurring customers under management contracts, we offer automatic quality monitoring and proactive replacement of any units that fail to meet standards.
Does seasonal demand affect pallet availability and pricing?
Yes. The pallet market experiences seasonal fluctuations. Demand peaks during the summer months (June through September) when agricultural harvests, beverage production, and general shipping volumes increase. During peak seasons, prices can rise 10 to 20 percent and lead times may extend. The lowest prices and best availability are typically in January through March. We recommend that regular buyers secure contract pricing or place advance orders before peak season to lock in rates and guarantee availability.
Can you handle emergency or rush orders?
Yes. We maintain large inventories of the most popular pallet sizes and grades at our Portsmouth, Virginia facility specifically to handle urgent requests. Rush orders for standard sizes can often ship within 24 hours for local delivery and 1 to 2 business days for regional shipments. A rush surcharge may apply depending on the size of the order and delivery distance. For custom-built pallets, rush production is available with a typical turnaround of 3 to 5 business days. Call us directly for time-critical needs and we will do everything possible to meet your deadline.
