Why Used Pallets Are the Smart Choice
The overwhelming majority of domestic shipments in the United States move on used pallets. There is a simple reason: a properly graded used pallet performs identically to a new one for most applications, at a significantly lower price point.
A standard 48×40 GMA pallet can cycle through the supply chain 15–20 times before reaching end of life. When you buy Grade A or B used pallets, you are purchasing a product that still has 80–90% of its functional life remaining. That translates to real savings — often $3–$6 per pallet — that compound quickly at volume.
Beyond cost, used pallets are the environmentally responsible choice. Reusing a pallet instead of building a new one saves approximately 3.5 board-feet of lumber and prevents roughly 27 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. At the scale most businesses operate, those numbers add up to a meaningful reduction in environmental impact.
Understanding Pallet Grades
We grade every used pallet using industry-standard criteria. Knowing the difference helps you match the right pallet to the right job.
The highest tier of used pallets. Grade A pallets have been used only once or twice and show minimal cosmetic wear. All boards are intact, stringers are undamaged, and nails are properly seated. These pallets are suitable for retail display, automated systems, and any application where appearance and consistency matter.
Ideal For
Automated warehouse systems, retail distribution, food & beverage
Load Capacity
2,500 lbs dynamic / 7,500 lbs static
The workhorse of the pallet industry. Grade B pallets show normal signs of use — minor staining, slight board discoloration, and small surface marks. Structurally sound with all boards intact and fasteners secure. These pallets represent the best balance of cost and performance for most shipping and storage needs.
Ideal For
General shipping, warehouse storage, domestic freight
Load Capacity
2,200 lbs dynamic / 6,500 lbs static
Budget-friendly pallets with visible cosmetic wear but full structural integrity. May have darker staining, minor board repairs, or replaced lead boards. Every Grade C pallet we sell passes our structural inspection — if a board is cracked, split, or loose, we repair or remove the pallet from our Grade C inventory.
Ideal For
One-way shipping, heavy industry, short-term storage
Load Capacity
2,000 lbs dynamic / 5,500 lbs static

Our 5-Step Quality Inspection
Every pallet that enters our yard goes through a consistent, documented process before it reaches your dock.
Inbound Assessment
Every incoming load is evaluated for overall condition. Pallets showing signs of contamination, chemical spills, or pest damage are immediately diverted to recycling.
Structural Inspection
Trained inspectors check every stringer, deck board, and bottom board for cracks, splits, and loose fasteners. Load-bearing elements must be fully intact.
Grading & Sorting
Pallets that pass structural inspection are graded A, B, or C based on cosmetic condition, number of cycles, and board quality. Each grade has clearly defined tolerances.
Repair (If Needed)
Pallets that narrowly miss a grade are repaired — boards replaced, nails re-driven, and stringers reinforced. Only then are they re-graded and moved to inventory.
Staging & Storage
Graded pallets are stacked by size and grade in our covered yard. Inventory is tracked digitally so we can confirm availability and ship same-day on most orders.
Pricing That Makes a Difference
Used pallet pricing is influenced by grade, size, quantity, and current market conditions. We offer transparent volume pricing so you always know what you are paying and why.
Single Truckload (500–700 pallets)
Best per-unit pricing with a single delivery. Ideal for businesses that go through pallets at a steady pace and have yard space for inventory.
LTL / Partial Loads (50–499 pallets)
Smaller quantities with flexible delivery. Perfect for seasonal demand, new facilities, or businesses testing a new pallet size.
Contract / Program Pricing
Recurring orders with locked-in pricing. We guarantee supply and price stability for 6- or 12-month terms. Volume discounts increase with commitment.

Quality Assurance
Our 12-Point Inspection Checklist
Every used pallet that leaves our yard in Portsmouth, VA passes a detailed 12-point structural and cosmetic inspection. This is how we guarantee that the grade you order is the grade you receive.
Top Deck Board Integrity
All top deck boards checked for cracks, splits, and missing pieces. Boards must be fully intact with no gaps wider than 1/2 inch.
Bottom Board Condition
Bottom boards inspected for breaks and loose fasteners. At least two of three bottom boards must be original and undamaged.
Stringer Inspection
All three stringers examined for cracks, notch damage, and crush marks. Stringers with through-cracks or broken notches are rejected.
Fastener Security
Every nail and staple checked for proper seating. Protruding nails are re-driven or replaced. Loose fasteners are a top cause of board failure.
Dimensional Accuracy
Overall length, width, and height verified against standard tolerances. Pallets outside +/- 1/4 inch are diverted to recycling.
Contamination Check
Visual and smell inspection for chemical spills, oil stains, food residue, and biological contamination. Any contamination means immediate rejection.
Moisture & Rot Assessment
Wood tested for excessive moisture, soft spots, and fungal decay. Pallets with active rot or moisture content above 25% are removed from inventory.
Pest & Insect Screening
Inspection for bore holes, sawdust trails, and live insect activity. Infested pallets are quarantined and destroyed per USDA guidelines.
Lead Board Evaluation
The outermost deck boards (lead boards) receive extra scrutiny since they absorb the most forklift impact. Cracked or heavily worn lead boards trigger a grade downgrade.
Notch Condition (Block Pallets)
For block-style pallets, all four-way entry notches are checked for sufficient clearance and structural integrity to accept fork tines without binding.
Surface Protrusions
The pallet surface is checked for protruding nails, wood splinters, and metal fragments that could damage products or injure workers during handling.
Overall Grade Assignment
After passing all checks, the pallet receives its final grade — A, B, or C — based on the cumulative condition score. Grade is marked and the pallet is sorted into inventory.
Technical Specifications
Load Capacity by Grade
Understanding the three types of pallet load capacity is critical for safe warehousing and shipping. Here is how each grade of used pallet performs across all three loading scenarios for a standard 48×40 stringer pallet.
| Load Type | Description | Grade A | Grade B | Grade C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic Load | Weight the pallet can support while being moved by a forklift or pallet jack | 2,500 lbs | 2,200 lbs | 2,000 lbs |
| Static Load | Weight the pallet can support while sitting stationary on a flat warehouse floor | 7,500 lbs | 6,500 lbs | 5,500 lbs |
| Racking Load | Weight the pallet can support when placed on racking beams with the center span unsupported | 2,000 lbs | 1,750 lbs | 1,500 lbs |
Load capacities are for standard 48×40 stringer pallets with uniformly distributed loads. Concentrated loads, point loads, or off-center weight distribution will reduce effective capacity. Contact us for guidance on your specific load profile.
Common Uses for Each Grade
Choosing the right grade means matching the pallet to the job. Here are real-world applications where each grade delivers the best value.
Grade A — Real-World Applications
- Retail distribution to club stores (Costco, Sam’s Club, BJ’s) where pallet appearance matters on the sales floor
- Automated warehouse systems (AS/RS) that require tight dimensional tolerances and consistent board surfaces
- Food and beverage distribution where auditors inspect pallet condition during facility reviews
- Pharmaceutical and medical device shipping where cleanliness and consistency are non-negotiable
- Customer-facing deliveries where pallets are visible to end consumers and represent your brand
Grade B — Real-World Applications
- General domestic freight shipping via LTL and full truckload carriers across the continental United States
- Warehouse storage and inventory staging in distribution centers, 3PLs, and manufacturing facilities
- Interplant transfers where pallets cycle between company-owned facilities on a regular schedule
- E-commerce fulfillment centers processing mixed-SKU orders with standard pallet jack handling
- Construction material supply chains moving lumber, drywall, roofing, and other building products
Grade C — Real-World Applications
- One-way shipments where pallets will not be returned and lowest cost is the top priority
- Heavy industrial applications like steel mills, foundries, and concrete plants where cosmetic wear is irrelevant
- Temporary outdoor storage of durable goods that are not affected by minor pallet imperfections
- Agricultural operations during harvest season when large volumes of inexpensive pallets are needed fast
- Export shipments to destinations where pallets are discarded after delivery and will not be reused
Frequently Asked Questions About Used Pallets
We answer these questions every day. If yours is not listed here, reach out and our team will get you an answer quickly.
Are used pallets safe for food products?
Grade A used pallets are widely used in the food and beverage industry for domestic distribution. They pass visual contamination inspections and are structurally sound. However, if your operation requires USDA or FDA compliance documentation, a chain-of-custody certification, or heat-treated pallets for export, new pallets or heat-treated used pallets may be more appropriate. We can advise based on your specific regulatory requirements.
How many times can a used pallet be reused?
A well-built 48×40 GMA pallet made from Southern Yellow Pine can cycle through the supply chain 15–20 times before reaching end of life. When you buy a Grade A used pallet, it typically has 10–15 trips remaining. Grade B pallets have 7–12 trips left, and Grade C pallets have 3–7 trips remaining. These are averages — actual life depends on load weight, handling practices, and storage conditions.
What is the difference between used and recycled pallets?
A used pallet is resold in its existing condition after inspection and grading. No boards are replaced or repaired — what you see is what was originally built. A recycled pallet has undergone active refurbishment: broken boards replaced with reclaimed lumber, nails re-driven or replaced, and the pallet restored to a higher standard. Recycled pallets cost slightly more than used but offer more consistent appearance and structural uniformity.
Can I return used pallets when I am done with them?
Yes. We operate a pallet buyback and pickup program for businesses in the Portsmouth, VA area and across the Mid-Atlantic region. If your used pallets are still in reusable condition (Grade B or better), we will purchase them back or credit your account. For damaged pallets, we offer free or low-cost pickup and recycling services. This creates a closed-loop system that reduces your waste disposal costs.
Do you deliver used pallets nationwide?
We deliver throughout the eastern United States from our Portsmouth, VA facility, with core coverage in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Washington DC, and the broader Mid-Atlantic. For customers outside our direct delivery range, we arrange LTL and full truckload shipments nationwide through our carrier network. Freight costs are included in our quotes so there are no surprises at delivery.
ROI Analysis
Why Used Pallets Make Business Sense
The financial case for used pallets is straightforward: you get 80–90% of the functional life of a new pallet at 40–60% of the cost. When you multiply that savings across thousands of pallets per year, the impact on your bottom line is substantial.
Companies that switch from new to Grade A or B used pallets typically see a payback period of zero — savings start from the very first order. There is no capital investment, no process change, and no performance trade-off for the vast majority of domestic shipping and warehousing applications.
Small Operation (500 pallets/month)
Switching from new ($11.50 ea) to Grade B used ($5.75 ea) saves $2,875 per month or $34,500 per year. That is enough to fund additional warehouse staff or equipment upgrades.
Mid-Size Distribution (2,000 pallets/month)
Annual savings of $138,000 by switching to used pallets. Many mid-size companies redirect these savings into faster delivery vehicles, automation, or facility expansion.
Enterprise Scale (10,000 pallets/month)
Annual savings exceeding $690,000. At this scale, used pallets represent one of the single largest cost-reduction opportunities in the supply chain without any operational disruption.
Total Cost of Ownership
The true cost of a pallet extends beyond purchase price. Here is how used pallets compare to new across all cost factors.
Best Practices
Storage & Handling Tips
Proper storage and handling can extend the useful life of your used pallets by 30–50%. Follow these guidelines to get the maximum number of trips out of every pallet.
Store Under Cover
Prolonged exposure to rain, snow, and direct sunlight accelerates wood decay and weakens fastener joints. Store pallets in a covered area or under tarps whenever possible. Even a simple overhead roof can extend pallet life by 2–3 additional cycles.
Stack on Level Ground
Uneven stacking surfaces cause pallets to warp and stringers to crack under the weight of the pallets above. Always stack on flat, compacted surfaces. Limit stack height to 15 pallets to prevent bottom-tier crushing damage.
Rotate Your Inventory
Use a first-in, first-out (FIFO) rotation to prevent pallets from sitting idle for extended periods. Pallets stored for more than 6 months without use are more susceptible to moisture absorption, mold growth, and pest activity.
Train Forklift Operators
The leading cause of pallet damage is improper forklift handling — hitting stringers, dragging pallets, and dropping loads from height. Brief quarterly training sessions on proper fork insertion and pallet pickup technique can reduce breakage by up to 40%.
Inspect Before Reuse
Before loading a used pallet for another trip, do a quick visual check: look for cracked stringers, split deck boards, and protruding nails. Pulling a damaged pallet out of service before it fails under load prevents product damage and worker injuries.
Keep Pallets Dry
Wood moisture content above 20% invites mold, fungal decay, and insect activity. If pallets get wet during outdoor staging, allow them to air-dry before stacking or storing in enclosed areas. Good air circulation between stacks accelerates drying.
Sustainability
Environmental Impact of Choosing Used
Every used pallet you purchase instead of a new one keeps wood in circulation and reduces the environmental footprint of your supply chain. The numbers are significant.
3.5bd ft
of lumber saved per pallet
Each used pallet you buy instead of new keeps 3.5 board-feet of virgin timber in the forest, preserving trees and the ecosystems they support.
27lbs
of CO2 avoided per pallet
Manufacturing a new pallet from raw timber generates roughly 27 pounds of carbon dioxide. Reusing an existing pallet eliminates this emission entirely.
6.1lbs
of landfill waste diverted
The average discarded pallet contributes 6.1 pounds of wood waste to landfills. Buying used pallets keeps this material productive and out of the waste stream.
12gal
of water conserved per pallet
Growing and processing the lumber for a single new pallet requires approximately 12 gallons of water. Used pallets carry zero additional water footprint.
Your Annual Impact at Scale
1,000 pallets
27,000 lbs CO2 saved
3,500 bd ft lumber preserved
5,000 pallets
135,000 lbs CO2 saved
17,500 bd ft lumber preserved
25,000 pallets
675,000 lbs CO2 saved
87,500 bd ft lumber preserved
