Buyer's Guide

How to Choose the Right Pallet

Selecting the right pallet comes down to four key factors. Understanding these criteria will help you balance performance, cost, and compliance for your specific application.

$

Budget & Volume

Your per-unit budget is the starting point. Used pallets offer the lowest cost at $4–$7 each in truckload quantities, making them ideal for high-volume domestic shipping. Recycled pallets fall in the $6–$9 range and deliver more consistent appearance. New pallets start at $9–$15+ but are necessary for export, automated systems, and food-grade environments. Consider your annual pallet spend — even a $2 per-unit savings across 10,000 pallets adds up to $20,000 per year.

W

Load Capacity & Handling

Every pallet has three load ratings: dynamic (in motion on a forklift), static (sitting on warehouse floor), and racking (supported only at the ends on racking beams). A standard 48×40 GMA pallet handles 2,500 lbs dynamic, 7,500 lbs static, and 2,000 lbs racking. If your loads exceed these thresholds, you need a heavy-duty or custom-engineered pallet with thicker stringers, hardwood lumber, or block construction.

A

Appearance & Brand Standards

If pallets are visible to your end customer — in retail displays, at trade shows, or during white-glove deliveries — appearance matters. Grade A used pallets and new pallets provide the cleanest look. For warehouse-only use, Grade B or C used pallets perform identically at a lower price. Some companies use color-coded or branded pallets for internal routing, which requires new construction with custom finishing.

C

Compliance & Destination

International shipments require ISPM-15 compliant heat-treated pallets with certified stamps. Food and pharmaceutical industries may require new, kiln-dried pallets with no history of contamination. Military and government contracts often specify exact dimensions and lumber grades. If your pallets stay domestic and are handled by standard forklifts, used or recycled pallets meet virtually every requirement.
