Hardwood vs Softwood Pallets: When to Use Each

Universal Pallet Supply

It Starts With the Wood

Not all wood pallets are created equal — and the biggest variable is the lumber species used in construction. Pallets are built from either hardwood or softwood, and the choice has real implications for load capacity, weight, cost, durability, and application suitability. Yet many pallet buyers never ask what species their pallets are made from, leaving the decision entirely to the supplier.

What Counts as Hardwood?

In the pallet industry, common hardwood species include oak, maple, beech, and birch. Hardwoods come from deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves in fall). They're characterized by higher density, greater strength, and more resistance to wear and impact.

Properties of hardwood pallets:

  • Higher load-bearing capacity per board thickness
  • Greater resistance to puncture and surface damage
  • Heavier overall pallet weight (45–80 lbs for a standard 48×40)
  • Higher cost due to slower tree growth and more expensive lumber
  • More difficult to nail — requires pre-drilling in some species

What Counts as Softwood?

Common softwood pallet species include southern yellow pine (SYP), spruce, fir, and poplar. Softwoods come from coniferous trees (evergreens). They grow faster, are more abundant, and cost less.

Properties of softwood pallets:

  • Adequate strength for most standard applications
  • Lighter weight (30–50 lbs for a standard 48×40)
  • Lower cost — often 20–40% cheaper than comparable hardwood pallets
  • Easier to work with — nailing, cutting, and repairing is simpler
  • More susceptible to surface damage and wear over multiple uses

When to Use Hardwood

Hardwood pallets are the right choice when:

  • Load weights are high: For loads exceeding 2,000 lbs, hardwood provides a crucial safety margin. Heavy industrial products, machinery, and dense goods like beverages benefit from hardwood's superior strength.
  • Pallets will be reused many times: In closed-loop systems where pallets cycle 20, 50, or 100+ times, hardwood's durability justifies the higher upfront cost. Cost per trip drops significantly over a long lifecycle.
  • Impact resistance matters: In rough environments — construction sites, heavy manufacturing, outdoor staging areas — hardwood withstands forklift impacts and rough handling better.
  • Export regulations favor it: Some export markets prefer or require hardwood for its strength. Heavy export loads almost always ship on hardwood pallets.

When to Use Softwood

Softwood pallets make more sense when:

  • Cost per pallet is the primary concern: For one-way shipping where the pallet won't return, softwood's lower price means lower cost per shipment.
  • Weight matters for freight: Lighter softwood pallets reduce freight costs. When shipping by air or over long distances, every pound counts.
  • The application is standard: For loads under 2,000 lbs in standard warehousing and distribution, softwood provides more than adequate performance.
  • Heat treatment is needed: Softwood pallets are slightly easier and cheaper to heat treat for ISPM-15 compliance because softwood reaches the core temperature faster due to lower density.

The Hybrid Option

Many pallet manufacturers build hybrid pallets: hardwood stringers or blocks for structural strength, with softwood deck boards for cost savings and lighter weight. This combination captures most of hardwood's strength advantage at a lower cost and weight than all-hardwood construction.

What Universal Pallet Supply Recommends

We stock both hardwood and softwood pallets, and we're happy to recommend the right choice for your specific application. For most general warehousing and distribution, softwood or hybrid pallets offer the best value. For heavy loads, high-cycle reuse, and demanding environments, hardwood is worth the investment. Contact us and we'll match the right material to your needs.
