Pallet Grades Explained: A, B, and C — Which Do You Actually Need?

Understanding Pallet Grades

Pallet grading isn't regulated by a single authority — grades can vary between suppliers. However, the industry has settled on a broadly accepted A/B/C system. Understanding these grades helps you make smarter purchasing decisions.

Grade A — Premium / Like New

Appearance: Clean, light-colored wood with minimal cosmetic blemishes. No broken or repaired boards. All components original and intact.

Use cases:

  • Export shipments where appearance matters
  • Retail-facing displays
  • Automated warehouse systems (AS/RS) where dimensional precision is critical
  • Pharmaceutical and food-grade applications

Price: Highest among used pallets, but still 20–30% less than new

Grade B — Standard / Good Condition

Appearance: May have some discoloration, slight staining, or minor cosmetic wear. Could have one or two repaired boards. Structurally sound and fully functional.

Use cases:

  • General warehousing and distribution
  • Domestic shipping
  • Manufacturing floor use
  • One-way shipments where the pallet won't return

Price: 30–40% less than new pallets. The sweet spot for most businesses.

Grade C — Economy

Appearance: Noticeably worn. Multiple repaired boards, visible staining, and cosmetic imperfections. Structurally functional but showing age.

Use cases:

  • Internal warehouse use
  • Short-distance shipping
  • Heavy industrial applications where aesthetics don't matter
  • Temporary storage

Price: 50–60% less than new. Maximum value for non-appearance-sensitive uses.

How to Choose

Ask yourself:

  • Will the customer see the pallet? If yes, go Grade A.
  • Does it need to survive automated handling? Grade A or B.
  • Is it a one-way trip? Grade B or C.
  • Is it staying in your warehouse? Grade C is perfect.

The Cost Savings Are Real

A company using 1,000 pallets per month that switches from new to Grade B recycled pallets can save $5,000–$8,000 monthly — that's $60,000–$96,000 per year, with zero impact on operational performance.
