Heat Treatment & Fumigation Services / MOLD GUARD
Because international shipping requires strictly regulated wood materials to ship products overseas, Universal Pallet offers a customized "heat treat" in which lumber is gas heated at 130°F for 30 minutes to protect the wood from mold, moisture, and insects that weaken pallet structure. This allows Universal Pallet to provide products for international shipping services to companies outside the U.S.
Pallets made of raw, untreated wood are not compliant with ISPM 15. To be compliant the pallets must be treated by either Heat Treating the wood or by using TOXIC insecticides to fumigate a trailer full of pallets. Universal Pallet Supply has chosen to heat treat pallets instead of fumigation, for two main reasons: It allows us a better control of the process ensuring that your pallet properly meets all ISPM 15 requirements, and the Heat Treatment is a more environmentally friendly system, because there are no harsh insecticides used in the process.
In the Heat Treating Process, the wood must be heated to achieve a minimum core temperature of 56° C or 133 degrees for at least 30 minutes. Pallets treated via this method will be stamped or printed to bear the initials HT near the IPPC logo, as well as our certification number. This stamping allows any international inspector to know visually that this pallet has been properly heat treated, and it shows that we treat these products, instead of outsourcing the job.
